Why are educational therapies important for children?

Every child learns in a different way, and some may need some additional support during their education journey. Having the right support systems in place is vital to ensure every young person unlocks their full potential.

We’ve found the best way to achieve this is by taking a personal approach to ensure each child has the right resources to flourish, reach their goals and learn new knowledge and skills in a place where they feel comfortable and secure.

What is educational therapy?

Although there is no strict definition, this type of therapy is a general term for when an educator or therapist works one-on-one with a child or young person.

This could mean helping a child with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) to read or helping a child to better their study and organisation skills.

It is important to remember that educational therapy services are not tutoring services – educational therapists use a broader approach and will have expert experience in working with young people who struggle with learning and thinking difficulties.

How can educational therapies help?

Educational therapies can help a child or young person to reach their potential in an environment that is suited for them.

For example, if the child has dyscalculia (which is a persistent difficulty in understanding numbers), an educational therapist could teach them strategies to help their struggles with numbers or perhaps help them to cope with possible anxiety.

Educational experts can help to build academic skills and self-confidence which is crucial for a child or young person to have.

A school environment might simply not be best for a child, especially if there is a lack of understanding of the child’s issues.

If this is the case, you might want to implement outside services which is where educational support services can help.

The strategies and treatments used by an educational therapist will vary but what they might do includes:

  • Helping to identify behaviour issues that might be caused by underlying learning and thinking differences
  • Teaching strategies to improve focus and work habits
  • Teaching time management and organisation skills
  • Acting as a link between home and school
